When you launch Image Capture the first time, it discovers applicable devices. When your Mac identifies your all-in-one printer over Bonjour (Apple’s implementation of zero-configuration networking), it recognizes that the device not only prints, but has other functions like scanning and fax send/receive. It also didn’t load up my Mac with bloated software.

That driver works each and every time with no issues.įor scanning, I started using the macOS Image Capture app and quickly found it was more functional than the Epson software. Instead, I let macOS find my printer and supply its own internal driver. Frustrated, I deleted all of the Epson apps.

The drivers included often kept me from printing unless I reloaded them each and every time! The scanner software was usable, but required hand-cropping of images smaller than a full page in size. I decided to try the Epson software with the new device, and that was a mistake.

For example, last year I purchased an Epson ET-4760 EcoTank printer because I was constantly changing print cartridges in an HP laser printer I owned.

With my past two all-in-one printers, I’ve found that the software and drivers that come with them are problematic. Why use Image Capture instead of my printer/scanner apps? Fortunately, Apple provides a macOS app that works with most all-in-one printers: Image Capture. However, most of these printers come with software and drivers that can be infuriatingly bad. I like that I can print documents when I need to, and I’ve found that document scanners save a lot of time. Please feel free to write back to us, if you have any questions or need any further assistance.I have a love-hate relationship with all-in-one printers.

I downloaded the install wizard “EN5530_198.exe” - which is for Windows 10 and is the same install wizard I already had - and ran it as Administrator,Įlected “Connect to a new printer” using a USB cable setup (because that’s the type of connection I have), but when the next screen appeared (“Connect the USB cable”), the “Skip” button was disabled. I did a “Powerful Uninstall” of the printer driver with IObit Uninstaller and then reinstalled it. Now the options that appear are “Photos,” “Printables” and “Copy.” If I tap “Copy,” the printer “Scan” no longer appears on the printer’s own little display. If I try to print any document - either from the new pop-up menu, or by opening the document in an app and then trying to print from there -the printer (By the way, when I click on “Troubleshoot compatibility” in the new pop-up menu, it says the Windows compatibility mode is Windows 8, not Windows 10.)

I also get that same new pop-up menu if I right-click on any document icon on my desktop.

I was scanning a bunch of things, and it was working fine - I’d right-click on the desktop icon, and a pop-up menu would appear that said, among other things, “Start scan.”īut now I’m suddenly getting a different pop-up menu that doesn’t mention scanning. I have an HP Envy 5530 e-All-in-One Printer (which is also a scanner). I think this is a Windows 10 problem, but maybe not.
